The De’VIA Manifesto (Deaf Art)
This is one of my favorite artists, his name is Chuck Baird and he just so happens to be Deaf. I have this particular piece hanging in my house and even after owning it for about 10 years it still takes my breath away every time I look at it. This painting is the ASL sign for sunset, but it’s so much more than a painting….it’s a way of communication, as it bridges the gap between the Deaf and Hearing community.
One of the reasons why Chuck Baird began to paint is to communicate; he wanted to show the beauty of the deaf community and wanted to communicate his own experiences as a Deaf individual. Baird said“I no longer paint what people would like to see. I paint for myself. It is about my own experience, my love of ASL and pride in our Deaf heritage. I sometimes create works that have no particular relation to the Deaf.” Although he is deceased he leaves quite the legacy for the Deaf community with his beautiful genre of artwork called “The De’Via Manifesto” and his advocacy in the Deaf arts.
I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do. I suggest you look up more of his work as he has many other paintings! Have a great weekend! and as always Learn ASL!
